WHAT

This side event aims to build a dialogue on women’s role in ecosystem restoration and a human rights-based approach through various examples of women-led restoration initiatives. It will link these initiatives to various multilateral agreements and bring together parties who have proactively recognized women’s rights to restore and protect their ecosystems. These cases exemplify the need for a more gender-responsive approach to ecosystem restoration. They would include learnings and challenges communities, especially women, face when restoring degraded land and waterscapes.

It will be hosted and facilitated by Women4Biodiversity in partnership with UN Decade fo Ecosystem Restoration, The African Women’s Network for Community Forest Management (REFACOF), Pastoral Communities Empowerment Programme (PACEP) CoopeSolidar R.L, CoopeMoluscosChomes R.L, Fundación Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (FARN), Fundacion Inalafquen, Network of Indigenous Peoples Solomon, Karen Environmental and Social Action Network (KESAN)

WHY

  • To share learning from Women-Led Restoration Initiatives and a human rights-based approach to sustainable use of biodiversity emerging from various corners of the world.
  • To understand the lessons, challenges, and opportunities from women-led restoration initiatives that take a human rights-based approach.
  • To highlight the importance of Gender-responsive approaches to biodiversity governance, especially for Ecosystem Restoration through linkages to various Multilateral Agreements, including Rio Conventions, SDGs, the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration, and the Global Biodiversity Framework.
